The first question should be, are footballers really role models and if so when do they become bad role models? This applies to any famous person that our kids may idolise.
Do our kids learn their drinking habits from their idols? After all, kids will learn their drinking habits from their parents or associates more than any one else and they will see their parents and such drunk a lot more times than they will see a footy player drunk, thats if they ever see a footy player drunk.
If the media is so concerned about famous people being bad role models, then why report anything bad that they do?
I personally would rather no media attention be paid, as this is the only time our kids actually become aware of any misdemeanors that any possible role models may do.
If a player or indeed any famous 'role model" is out drunk at 3am, are they really being a bad role model to kids? After all, how many kids are up at that time to witness it. If a player gets charged with DUI, are they being a bad role model for kids, my kids wouldn't know about it unless they read all the court records.
As mentioned, its the media who is bringing these issues to our kids attention. Not the parents, my kids are in bed at 3am. They don't see anybody getting drunk at that time let alone their "role models". Sure, if a player is drinking or carrying on in front of them in a public place, then by all means that should be taken to task by someone.
I personally don't want my kids to know what any of these famous people do in their own time and am quite happy for them to think these people are perfect human beings. Its only the media bringing these issues to their attention and creating the bad role model.
The media doesn't splash the truth about Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny so let our kids think their sporting or other heroes are truly perfect. The kids will learn the truth in their own time.
So if the media is truly concerned about footy players or stars being bad role models, then stop reporting it. And if parents are also concerned, then stop buying the papers or start protesting that we don't want this news all over the place for our kids to know.
